happy birthday to caddy...many days ago.

i went to espn.com, and they had this commercial for that "dodgeball" movie where some kid gets whacked with those red balls. it's hilarious. i recently figured out that dodgeball was pretty much the same game that we called "bombardment" in my grade school. this was THE best gym activity EVAR.

basic rundown of rules, for those who haven't played. you play on a basketball court, each team on either side of the half court line. theres a bunch of balls in play. there were a bunch of types of balls, from nerf footballs, to foam soccerballs, to kickballs. although this was fueled by our school's ghettoness, it added a lot of character to the game, because sometimes you'd ditch a kickball if you saw a football laying there. anyhoo, if you throw a ball to someone on the other team, and they don't catch it, they're "out", and they form a line outside the playing field. if you throw a ball at someone, and they do catch it, you're out, and they get to free the next person in the "out" line. basically, you wanna peg everyone on the other team, and have them not catch it. whichever team has all their guys "out" first loses.

in 4th grade when we had our bombardment unit, it was all i could think about on days we had gym. i'd always get impatient if our pre-activity exercises (jumping rope, sit-ups, stretching) went long. what made it even better was that the two teams that played against each other were always us and the other 4th grade class, so there was a bitter rivalry there. the best was when we ran behind the girls like they were shields, then pop out behind them and nail someone in the crotch. it added a very strategic element to the game. anyways, it leads me to the top five gym activities, presented by ESPN25.

5. basketball - 11th grade

the basketball unit in high school was awesome, because everyone in the class got seeded by results of games of 21, and then distributed into 14 teams of 3, and there was a ladder system, where if you won, you moved up, and if you lost, you moved down. one time my team got up to the 1st place game, but lost. this and senior year was the peak of my basketball skillz. also reminds me of those driveway games at scott's house before watching bulls playoff games.

4. handball - 6th grade/7th grade/11th grade

it's like hockey, but with hands. can't go wrong there.

3. flag football - 8th grade/11th grade

early age training on the buddhist temple asphalt fields translated well into gym flag football.

2. floor hockey - 6th, 7th, 8th grade/ 10th,11th grade

very close to bombardment on this list. i liked playing all positions, but being goalie was probably the best. the only crappy thing was that if you were a forward or defenseman, you could only stay inside the blue lines in 8th grade.

1. bombardment - 4th, 5th grade

as explained above. one rule that we had was that if you threw a ball into the opposite basket (which was impressive when you're in 4th grade), you get a jailbreak. so when there was like one boy left, he was darting behind all the girls and trying to make a miraculous shot to free everyone. intense moments. i moved from cicero to darien between 5th and 6th grade. the first time in 6th grade at fairview they said we were going to play bombardment, i was very excited. then i saw they played some pansy brand of bombardment, where no one gets out, and you have to knock down laundry detergent bottles. probably one of the worst days of my life.
